MarineDiscoveryWest wins a prestigious 2008 WA Environment Award

2008 WA Environment Award - Coastal, Marine and Estuarine category
Hon. Donna Faragher MLC (Minsister for Environment; Youth) proudly
presents the Environment Award to Department of Fisheries representatives.

Proudly on display in the foyer of the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre (NMDC) is the 2008 WA Environment Award - Coastal, Marine and Estuarine category. Recognising outstanding achievement in the protection, sustainable use or enhancement of our coastal, marine and estuarine environments, this award is a tremendous compliment to MarineDiscoveryWest (MDW), the Department of Fisheries' community education team throughout Western Australia. MDW is an initiative of the Department of Fisheries, which co-ordinates delivery of aquatic education programs from the South Coast to the Kimberley and many places in between, including Perth and Mandurah.

The NMDC is the central community education hub, but the success of the initiative also comes from energetic education staff in Albany, Busselton, Bunbury and Broome delivering valuable knowledge about WA's coastal, ocean and river environments.

Communications and Education Manager Andrew Cribb said MDW had recorded significant achievements since it was established less than two years ago.

"We have a team of enthusiastic educators who work on many practical and enjoyable ways of informing school children and adults alike about the importance of WA's aquatic environment, sustainable behaviour that supports sustainable fisheries, a better understanding of marine science and management and enhancing the community's sense of place and involvement in our coastline, oceans and river system environments."

We encourage you to take part in our award winning marine education activities and displays by visiting the NMDC or by contacting your nearest regional community education officer.
